2025/02/11 Inspiring the Next Generation: Interviews with Women in Science at Samsung Bioepis

In celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible female scientists here at Samsung Bioepis who are making strides in their fields. Their passion, dedication, and innovation serve as an inspiration to future generations of women in science.

We’ve had the privilege of sitting down with Jieun Shin, Vice President and Team Leader of Manufacturing Science & Technology and Jiyoon Kim, Manager of Manufacturing Science Group 2, our remarkable scientists, to learn about their journeys, challenges, and the impact they hope to have in the scientific community.

1. What motivated you to pursue your career in developing medicines, specifically biosimilars?

[Jieun Shin]

Since I was young, I have been drawn to life sciences and biotechnology because they offered the chance to work on cutting-edge innovations while addressing some of the most pressing medical challenges.

Biosimilars, in particular, captivated me because of their potential to expand access to life-changing treatments for patients in need by making these innovative biologics more affordable and ultimately making the healthcare system sustainable.

The idea that we can develop high-quality, more affordable biologics—making critical therapies more accessible to patients—aligns deeply with my personal and professional values. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that our work helps create a more sustainable healthcare system while upholding the same high standards of safety and efficacy.

[Jiyoon Kim]

I’ve always been fascinated by the power of science to improve patients’ lives and have always considered it to be my calling. During my studies, I was particularly drawn to biologics because of their complexity and potential to treat a wide range of diseases from autoimmune to orphan diseases.

Similarly, I wanted to pursue a career in making biosimilars as it meant that I was contributing to making life-saving treatments more accessible to patients worldwide. Knowing that my work contributes to lowering healthcare costs while maintaining the same high standards of safety and efficacy motivates me every day.

2. Can you tell us about a project or research that you are most proud of and why?

[Jiyoon Kim]

Since the first day at Samsung Bioepis, I’ve been responsible for the development of our ophthalmology treatment. The treatment was in its very infancy as we were just establishing its development pathways. But through years of development, clinical trials and approvals, I’m very proud that its now anticipated to use to treat patients with ophthalmic diseases. Seeing a project come to life and directly impact patients in need is an indescribable feeling. And based on this experience, I’m ready to contribute and devote my skills to providing high-quality, proven biologic medicines more quickly and affordably.

[Jieun Shin]

As a scientist, developing and producing biologic medicines while making them affordable and maintaining their top quality and yields has always been very rewarding for me. It meant that I was able contribute to making medicines more accessible and affordable for the people who need them the most.

I’m also very proud that we’re able to work together with talented partners, push the boundaries of science, and enhance the lives of patients through teamwork and innovation.

3.
What role do you think diversity and inclusion play in the biosimilars industry, and how have you experienced this at our company?

[Jieun Shin]

Diversity and inclusion are essential to innovation, especially in a field as complex as biosimilars. When we bring together people with different backgrounds, experiences, and ways of thinking, we unlock new ideas and creative problem-solving approaches.

At our company, I’ve experienced firsthand how an inclusive environment empowers individuals to share their insights openly. For example, in our Manufacturing Science & Technology Team, we foster a culture where junior scientists and experienced leaders alike contribute equally to technical discussions. This has led to unexpected breakthroughs and a stronger team dynamic. Additionally, as a woman in science, I appreciate the emphasis on mentorship and leadership development, which ensures that more voices are heard and valued at all levels.

[Jiyoon Kim]

Diversity and inclusion are crucial, especially in a field that relies so much on teamwork and innovation. When people from different backgrounds come together, we challenge assumptions, explore new ideas, and ultimately create better solutions.

At Samsung Bioepis, I’ve felt supported as a young female scientist. I’ve had opportunities to learn from mentors, contribute to important projects, and have my ideas taken seriously. Seeing women in leadership roles at our company  is also inspiring—it reassures me that there’s a path for growth and that my voice matters.

4. How do you think we can inspire more women and girls to pursue a career in biosimilars and science in general?

[Jieun Shin]

We can inspire more women and girls to pursue careers in biosimilars and science by increasing visibility of female role models, providing mentorship opportunities, and fostering an inclusive environment where diverse voices are valued. Encouraging curiosity, supporting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, and showing the real-world impact of science can help young women see themselves in this field and believe in their potential to make a difference.

I can confidently say that I am blessed to be working in a company which allows me to balance my life and work. As a mother of a young child, I always find myself juggling and making sacrifices for either work or spending time with my kid. At Samsung Bioepis, there’s an onsite, company-owned daycare for working parents with young children – which helps tremendously. Employees with young children can also apply for shortened work hours.

[Jiyoon Kim]

I think it’s also important to break the stereotype that science is intimidating; curiosity and perseverance matter more than perfection.

As mentioned earlier, having a female role model, someone I can relate to and look up to, and who has been in similar shoes as mine, making it to the top is very important. Fortunately for me, I have a mentor, and a leader like Jieun who I can look up to. It sets a great example for people like me and my fellow colleagues, showing that we can continue to work no matter the challenges life throws at you!
